The Infant's Dream

Thoughts of mother’s milk, of course,

       and the scent of mother-sweat

                 on long, close-carried summer walks

are pulling at the corners

        of your sleeping lips.

I think there must be more than mother-sweet

that animates the evening scenes

          behind your eyelids—

closed, red-veined, and soft.

Mother dark, mother quiet, mother deep—

          these too are yours.

Surely, you are close enough

           to remember passing time

before time was marked

           how shadow looked

before light cut through

           what breathing was, alone,

before the air.

Curl close my guileless dreamer

before the raucous chaos

of the world creeps in, crowds out

what you already know

             of being without boundary

                         but for liquid, permeating.

Inch your sleeping body

           nearer mine.

Murmur curious secrets

         only you have learned

                      of this, my mother-self.
