Bloodsuckers

Between the humming carriageways of the A1 and

our street, what was for centuries a Hertfordshire

meadow became churned up heaps of barren clay

and rubble: cold and glistening at first, till summer

when it tried to reclaim itself. Grass flourished, grass

swaying, fine, light green, feathered with seed heads.

We’d burrow into it and tie up the tops to make what

we called caves, and sit in there, feeling as close

to natural and simple as we were capable of. Late

afternoons after school we’d cut long armfuls of it;

with hair ribbon or elastic bands, tie it into bunches

for our mothers, thinking they could put them

in glass vases on window sills. Which they never did.

Like the invading army that we were, we killed all

the small scarlet beetles we could find: bloodsuckers

we’d yell, feral terror of the colour red driving us on,

until the council arrived with noisy bulldozers,

set up goal posts: all ready then, for football matches.
