White, A Sequel

We laughed when a stranger

blew his horn at us,

flooded your pick-up’s cab

with headlights.

I forgot my live-in lover.

You forgot your wife.

But then you stopped

short, swinging your

baseball bat of remorse:

two young sons to hurt.

It was I who struck out,

pleading “just one night”

until no motel

was small enough.

I sent a poem, tempting.

You never answered.

Four years later,

a freak accident,

the same pick-up truck

we struggled in

sinking to the bottom

of a pond, did you say

my name or even think it

as water crept up

past handles I'd touched?

When I heard,

I wrote another poem about

us. I called it "White."

For the first snow.

For the color of mourning in China.
