After Seeing Beckett’s ‘Not I’

for NB & CH

It’s no longer pretend. Time is moving

like a crocodile. The sun’s been put

out. Risen questions fall and multiply

in the gloom. Rain casts its blessing

down glass, slips into watery currents

of the dream. A church bell croaks weakly

on the hour, wrung of all confidence.

Machines send messages quicker

than light, the world handheld, portable.

The blueprint of a man’s heart

haunts him in his bed while the couple

next door make love to ‘Strange Fruit’.

Freed of the moon the sky turns black,

rummaging in the water’s lost reflection.

Aeroplanes pass bizarrely overhead

through heavens not ready to be explained.

Rain fills the sea. A Post-it note

sticks to something best forgotten.
