Flight

—for Jimmy Teruaki Murakami (June 5, 1933 – February 16, 2014), artist, animator, director

Remember me, I drank a black pint in Dingle

was consumed by Mount Eagle

intoxicated by the Emerald Atlantic.

Remember me when in a brushstroke,

I screamed across the hot blue sky of Tule Lake California.

And, like the rouge red of red wine in the scorched earth of internment,

I painted the wings of birds.

In a brushstroke I almost drowned,

inhaled by the sea of ignorance

my so-called freedom.

This same white streak carried me over continents

for I painted the wings of birds.

Remember to always paint wings

remember me when the gull cries

for in my heart a candle burns.

Remember me when the gull cries.

For in my heart a candle burns.

    Remember

                I am
