The Beach

Too fat and self-conscious in my swimsuit,

so I hike my grown-up dress just past my knees.

The waves come crashing

and my toes curl around the sand

to keep it in place against the ocean’s tug

and I remember how when you’re little

how ominous the large waves are, how heart-pounding,

and how we know then, and forget,

there is everything to fear about the natural.

Trending in Ireland: ‘Seamus Heaney’.

Scroll and the poetry explodes –

blackberries and spades and coffins,

the words unearthed,

those fragments of school that stay with us always,

mostly dormant.

All this time, without knowing,

we’ve been perched on the edge of Vesuvius.
