Hiding Place

It's night, she walks down to the empty beach,

the tide is on its way in,

she hurries to the cave

beaten into the rocks.

It was her secret hiding place

in the school holidays

when the days seemed to stretch out forever

and the sun was always shining

and after they counted to ten,

they came to find her,

where she hid in the cool quiet,

nursing up against the rock

that dribbled with  wet,

it didn't matter that her shorts got saturated

it was summer and no one minded then.

Now she doesn't care about the tide,

splashes her way to the mouth,

she needs to feel her cave around her,

the familiar touch of worn rock

against her skin

as she claws her way in,

feels her way deeper,

then wades into the dark pool,

sliding under like an eel,

back to where she knows best.

Finally in the dark, she can explore,

relieved to let the nothingness seep in.
