Butterfly Bush

It couldn’t have been because idleness that I picked this:

short stalk from a butterfly bush.

And anyway, why not be idle?

Detached from the root I sense

its pulse slow, trying to save itself—

a soft song slip from

purple-petaled tiny trumpets,

lyrics spill out of

lush gramophone limbs; sweet

fragrant flowers, violet-colored tongues

touching the once-rising sun.

Now it is setting, my fingers

fiddle upon the form—monarch

feeds musically—feeling

the delicate, the dying.

Wherever there’s death: the drums

drumming life, filling the heartbeat

of something else, something not so distant.

With this wilting will it make you wonder

at how a butterfly confusedly comes, but

out of instinct, to the beauty that beholds the bush,

the flowers from which it desires its fill.
