The Goose Girl

Bowl of almost-ochre,

bag-cupped eyes, goose clutched

with love. Permanent detail.

French peasant painted by

Irish artist, attended by

tourists avoiding low-ceilinged

bedrooms and sky-covered crowds.

I want to come closer, shared sorrow better

than this thin feeling. Not student or tourist,

I am the one with the favourite painting,

asking after her when she is in storage,

regretful buying the gift-shop print,

hating made decoration out of who I visit.
