David

i.m. David Lane (1913-1955)

It was night, still dark when
I woke in my parent's bed,
In my mother’s embrace,
Under the tears she spilled.
I was not to know,
I did not understand
The vacant hollow
My child’s body filled.
How was I to realise
Why, and with such pain,
She softly repeated
Again and again
My name?
