ALLEGRA JOSTAD SILBERSTEIN

allegra jostad silbersteinAllegra Jostad Silberstein grew up on a farm in Wisconsin but has lived in California since 1963.  Her love of poetry began as a child when her mother would recite poems as she worked.  In addition to three chapbooks of poetry, she has over a hundred publications in journals, such as Blue Unicorn, California Quarterly, Rattlesnake Review, Poetry Now, and a growing number online.  In March 2010, Allegra became the first Poet Laureate for the city of Davis, California. She is also a dancer and sings and plays washboard with Front Porch Bluegrass in Davis.

Still Life with Old Books

(after viewing this painting by Rembrandt)

Cracked spines.  Crumbling pages.

Five books in degrees of disrepair

one open to read.

Light shines with dance-like grace

on these relics of a world long gone.

A lute on its side

brings light the dark wall behind it.

I can hear its soft music.

I taste the piece of bread,

the glass of wine.

A bit of feather-down drifts from somewhere

and fastens on my pen...

each time I check

it is still there but changing its place

in the drift of air.

Grandfather's bible, in the trunk upstairs,

the dark cover fallen apart

from thin gold-edged pages of text

with no one to claim it

I keep in remembrance.

Autumn leaves fall.

They crumble into earth.

Rembrandt’s soft light remains,

engrammic,

illuminating museums of life.
