Vision of the Camera Obscura

The crystalline lenses of minnows and fallfish, thin delicate films of albumen.

A meniscal loupe exposing the Garden of Eden through a minute aperture,

a dark chamber known to pharaohs and Arabian nights. The scattered rays

of sunlight. An Argand burner in a magic lantern, glass globules melted

in a spirit lamp. Mirrors, anamorphoses, optical boxes, dioptric paradoxes.

A phantasmagoric stroboscopic effect. The visual persistence of inventors,

faddists, reckless dabblers. A quattrocento fixing of the image of life.

Light-sensitive photographic plates, exact historical dates, the synthesis

of motion. Living figures on the screen. The strolling sauntering gaze

of the converging surface, the concave mirror of transparent focus.

Shadow views of the sciopticon, kinetoscopes, phenakistiscopes,

zoetropes, cogged wheels and the nickel slots of Edison illuminating

the Promethean dream of practical men. A wide angle, the telephoto end.

The blinding of a distanced, monocular eye. Camera, crew, lights and scene,

frame-lines, cuts and joins. The desiderata of portable apparatus, shells,

cameos, coins. A human hand and face. Panoramic dioramic space.

Dissolving views of the peepshow. Oil, coal-gas, oxy-hydrogen limelight,

combustible frames bursting into incandescent flames. Perspectiva artificialis.
