The Book of Us
I ask you to lie down
at my knees.
onto your body
tanned as calf skin.
I cover you in lime,
leave you in the sun to dry,
drag a luna knife from throat,
over chest, ripe mound of thigh,
to bauble of ankle.
Now you are truly naked.
I douse a peacock feather in copper-green ink,
scratch our cursive tale onto your hide,
the final word, unpunctuated
I ask my skin to lie down
pull you gently onto me, make an imprint
of this poem on my stomach
encourage your tongue against mine,
swathe my bones with yours,
blurring the ink.
Our touch: vellum
smudging our own gospels.
