I Lost Me Child

I lost me child

I hang my stocking no more;

empty dreams can’t fill its holes.

I lost me child

I don’t dress up the tree next to the fireplace;

I turn my head away

as if ashamed to feel its grace.

I lost me child.

I now pull the milky beard

and all I see is a human face.

Christmas lights now blind me;

I’m left with no faith.

Where is me child?

I am never at the door

when children come

to sing for me that song

What’s left in me child?

I have less and less.

Each year that goes.

Come back to me child.

And leave me no more.
