In Her Later Years
Honorary Mention in the 2011 Gregory O'Donoghue International Poetry Competition
with evening shrunk
to a moth-beat,
what gladdens her
is the random setting
of mismatched delph
on the kitchen table.
Slowly and ceremoniously
she lifts cups and plates,
examines their base,
checks their place on the table,
sets them back
with a deft exactness.
Ordered and absorbed,
her delph ceremony
performed over and over;
cups, plates and glassware
lifted and swivelled at eye level
as if, for an instant,
a lens flickers, a glimpsed imprint
swims into vision
bringing a wild delight to her eyes.
Her lips tremble,
a faint whisper
rivers the skin of her neck,
a remnant of stem crystal
tilts in her bony fingers.
