Had I Been Made a Plate

Sealed in Styrofoam and cloth,
mounds of plates kept for occasions,
were found in attics and basements.
They had outlived their owners,
in the protective casings;
sterilized flower borders
maintaining their ancient shine.

But had I been made a plate,
hand washed after annual meals
and stored for a definite time,
I would forgo this quiet, clean end
to be the one that slipped from hands
of the designated dryer, crashing
on the tile, interrupting the mild
chatter of guests;

to evoke a hushed gasp
or hesitant applause.
