MIRIAM GAMBLE

Miriam Gamble poem in Southword

Miriam Gamble was born in Brussels in 1980 and grew up in Belfast. She studied at Oxford and at Queen’s University Belfast, where she completed a PhD in contemporary British and Irish poetry. She won an Eric Gregory Award in 2007, and her pamphlet, This Man's Town, was published by tall-lighthouse in 2007. A selection of her poems appears in the Bloodaxe anthology Voice Recognition: 21 poets for the 21st century (2009). Her first book-length collection, The Squirrels Are Dead, is published by Bloodaxe in 2010.

Mi Territorio

 After Pablo Neruda

Here is my country. If you’re wise,
you will turn on your heel and send it away.
Keep your bobbing sea-lanes well policed,
your borders; once in, it will cling to you abjectly.

It’s not valuable, even in its own eyes,
though its gorge rises at the slightest hint of a calumny.
In its vaults are discovered no recumbent stour-blown riches;
its mint gags on original currency.

Smooth turtle with a rubbled underside,
it can’t get its head round concepts of money
and puffs like a filthy old factory stack its weal to ruin.
It is always changing its hue in company.

Here is the plumb-deep, ankle-deep midden of my country.
Do I jest, or speak the truth?  And what of these analogies?
