The Crooked Other

I discover near the end of life,
a spirit stands inside of me,
that makes me less than other men,
hangs ghost lenses in my eyes
and lays a lampshade on my head
of muffling ectoplasmic cloth.

Please will you tell me who I am,
where ghost ends and I begin?
and unseen spinning high above,
what dark star is ruling me,
that when I love and I reach out,
gags me so I cannot speak?

In my garden digging worms,
I find dead limbs thrust from the ground:
a dried-up shrub that flowered once,
succoured many seeking wings
and pleased the eye with grace of stem.
With one great heave its root comes out.

And in my hands as dirt rains free,
an eyeless face with twisted horns,
a demon's head with matted hair:
that wooden mouth so chill and hard,
could scowl a lifetime in the dark
and never know that once it flowered.
