The Game of Sleep

Tenderly tucking, my daughter plays
the game of sleep. Nearly two,
she loves my old stuffed penguin best,
a mouse with a belly button,
and her new rag doll.
This favoured crew
is propped on pillows,
and ranked in blankets.

She and I join in,
her curly laughing head
pressed sideways against mine,
her bottom lifted, wiggling.
Then she’s off, romping on the big bed –
the very feather and down
of her making – where she loves
to leap and roll and tunnel,
throw herself forward and chuckle,
in the cushiony give of chequered quilt.

Tonight I tickle and trip,
revelling in her giggly mouth’s cascade,
her nuzzling joy a gift this bed bestows,
just as her begetting here
was rose; was gold.
