PATRICK MADDOCK

Patrick Maddock is a former Hennessy Poetry Winner whose poems have appeared in various magazines in England and Ireland.
Dazzle
The greenfinch is dead.
The body is warm—
but see how the neck fails,
slumps into the chest.
So many paths
and it took the one
to the room we’d planned
to allow in more sun.
Should we whistle
a crowd of window birds
and slice them into silhouettes
numerous enough to block the light
make a house so safe,
nothing dazzles a finch in flight?
