MATTHEW GEDEN
Born in England, Matthew Geden moved to Kinsale in 1990 and runs a bookstore in the town. He co-founded the SoundEye International Poetry Festival. His poems have appeared in several publications both at home and abroad including Something Beginning with P, Poets of the Millennium and The Backyards of Heaven. His first full length collection, Swimming to Albania, was published by Bradshaw Books in 2009.
St. Brigid's Day
Already there’s a spring in my step;
touch by touch the frost disappears
in the slow light, inches into nothing.
You have given away my past,
my jumpers, books, letters and gold.
Sent them to the poor and overseas.
I hope they travel well, make
a difference like a smile, small
comforts, silent breaking of the soil.
Generosity has its own rewards; baby
talk, the prayers of blacksmiths, midwives,
poets, scholars, travellers and watermen.
Take what you need; flour, milk, my sword.
When the days stretch, I’ll head for the hills.
