GERRY BOLAND

Gerry Boland lived in Dublin for most of his life until he decided ten
years ago to retreat to the peace and quiet of the north Roscommon
countryside. He writes poetry and short fiction and publishes in Irish
and international journals. He came third in the 2008 Francis MacManus Short Story Competition and his story, 'Bridie's Birthday Party', is in the current Fish Anthology. He has had two travel books on Dublin published, the most recent of which was Strollers Guide to Dublin (Gill & MacMillan, 1999). He is a regular visitor to Annaghmakerrig.
winding down
suddenly I seem to have got older
I wouldn’t mind if I could pinpoint
a moment a date a period an event
then I could say yes
that was it now it makes sense
but no nothing like that
everything moves more slowly now
as if someone prised me open
in the middle of the night
removed a battery
perhaps even two
yet couldn’t be arsed to tell me
give it to me straight whoever you are
is this how it’s going to be from now on
a battery here a battery there
until my troubled heart gives out?
